1. The Hook / Overview
Northstar Commerce had healthy traffic and strong product-market fit, but the checkout funnel dropped sharply on the payment step. I partnered with product, analytics, and CX to design a checkout recovery flow that felt transparent, quick, and reassuring.

2. The Problem
The original flow relied on optimistic UI states without clear feedback. When failures occurred, users were forced to restart from step one.
3. The Discovery
I ran rapid discovery in two tracks:
- Behavioral analytics to identify high-friction interactions.
- Moderated sessions to understand confidence-breaking moments.
Key insight: users were not confused by forms, they were anxious about risk. We pivoted from minimizing steps to maximizing clarity at critical checkpoints.
4. The Solution
I implemented the experience in Astro with progressive enhancement and edge-cached fragments. The interface introduced:
- Persistent order summary with real-time totals.
- Inline payment validation with plain-language error recovery.
- Retry-safe submit states to prevent duplicate charge fear.
5. The Impact & Results
In the first 30 days post-launch:
- Checkout completion increased from 38% to 50%.
- Payment-related support contacts dropped by 42%.
- Largest Contentful Paint improved from 2.7s to 1.4s.
